Identification
How to Identify Red Imported Fire Ants
Jun 28, 2026 · 4 min read
Solenopsis invicta (Red Imported Fire Ants) can be distinguished from native species by several key features. RIFA workers range from 2–6mm in length and vary in size within the same colony — a hallmark of polymorphic species.
Key identification markers:
- Copper-brown head and darker abdomen
- Multiple worker sizes (2–6mm) in one nest
- Dome-shaped mound with no visible entry hole
- Aggressive swarming when nest is disturbed
- Painful sting producing white pustule after 24hrs
If you suspect RIFA, do not disturb the nest. Use the Fire Rant camera to scan and report immediately.
